"You are capable and deserving of feeling at peace and achieving your goals."

Do you struggle with building secure and respectful relationships, communicating confidently, or experiencing fulfilling intimacy? Is it challenging to identify, validate, or express your feelings and set boundaries to honor your needs? Maybe you feel burdened by anxiety or stuck in certain patterns that are not serving you in relationships or in working towards your goals.

Together we’ll uncover insight on how your past experiences may be impacting your challenges in the present, reflect on your values and what gives you fulfillment, and use this knowledge to build new ways of moving forward and living your life how you want to.

At the same time, we will explore different tools including ways of tuning into your body and developing emotional skills that you can use to manage stress, reduce anxiety, develop kinder self-talk, improve relationships and communication, and overall work towards creating a life full of meaning and enjoyment.

Meet Jamie Tanzer, LMHC,
Licensed Psychotherapist

I believe that each person is a mosaic of experiences, identities, and values and I will tailor our work to your unique needs and goals. My approach is engaged, collaborative, and not mysterious – I’ll share my observations with you, explain what I believe you may find helpful and why, and welcome your feedback on what is and is not working for you.

My approach is trauma-informed and LGBTQIA+ affirming as I work with individuals and couples in New York City and throughout NY state. My clients often share that they feel deeply understood and validated as we explore themes such as anxiety, complex trauma, relationship and intimacy concerns, self-worth, and boundaries. Couples have shared that our time together greatly improved communication skills and conflict resolution, strengthened emotional and physical intimacy, and allowed them to understand and navigate the impacts of prior trauma on the relationship. I have particular experience in working with interracial and interfaith couples and exploring how differences in identity impact the relationship.

My therapeutic approach draws from Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), the Gottman Method for Couples Counseling, and Somatic Therapy.

That’s a lot of technical jargon, but the main point is that by integrating methods that build insight, self-understanding, and tangible emotional and physical strategies, you’ll be able to:

  • Discover new ways to connect and communicate with yourself and others
  • Develop a robust toolkit of skills to manage anxiety, emotional distress, and interpersonal conflict
  • Attend to wounds of pain and fear from past experiences, repairing the impact of trauma
  • Feel more in tune with your body and address physical symptoms of stress such as sleep difficulties, GI issues, muscle tension, and more
  • Grow in self-compassion and confidence and release shame and self-criticism

I would love to meet for a complimentary 30-minute phone session to discuss how I can support you in your mental health journey.

MY THERAPY STYLE

For me there are three types of best parts – one is being able to consistently show up for my clients and let them know I always care about them and hold space for them without judgment, getting the honor of witnessing the highs and lows of their life.
The second is as we try out different approaches and realize which ones resonate, and start to really get some momentum.
The third is when a client is telling me something about their recent experience and doesn’t even notice how they were able to break a pattern or use a skill we have been working on. It is amazing to witness that something they have been trying to achieve for so long now feels like second nature – from a moment of feeling like “of course my needs matter” to feeling at ease in a social situation or responding to a critique at work confidently and without anxiety.

So many friends and acquaintances over the years told me that I made them feel really comfortable discussing sensitive topics, that they loved talking through things with me, or even that I was the first or only person to whom they felt able to disclose a trauma. The idea of becoming a therapist was always in the back of my mind, and after working in consulting for several years, I decided to make that leap. I realized I could make a more meaningful contribution to my community by leaning into that natural ability to make people feel safe and supported.

The ability to tolerate emotional discomfort. Feeling empathy is meeting someone where they are and connecting with them in their distress. When we can’t tolerate that distress, we tend to shy away from it which can look like emotionally distancing, shutting down, or even invalidating others in an attempt to get the distress to just go away. When we have compassion and acceptance for emotional pain in ourselves and others rather than demonizing it, it feels easier to hold and move through.
